Chill Out: Here's the DL on CBD for pets.

Why Should Dog Owners Consider CBD for Their Pets? Pet owners have been finding CBD oil for dogs as a helpful therapy for a variety of conditions. Get the facts about this trending new therapy so you can be informed before trying it with your pet. Overall, CBD itself seems to be incredibly safe in dogs. To ensure your dog is getting the best treatment possible, here are the guidelines to administer CBD oil for dogs safely and effectively.

What is CBD?

CBD, or cannabidiol, is a chemical compound from the cannabinoid family that naturally occurs in the Hemp plant. Scientists have isolated 108 different types of cannabinoids in cannabis. Unlike THC, CBD is non-intoxicating, meaning it will not make your pet feel high when consumed.

Cannabis oils are extremely popular—these are commonly prepared as liquid extracts that can be dropped under the tongue or mixed into food and beverages. While CBD doesn’t provide any type of euphoric high typically associated with cannabis, many users report pets seem to be more relaxed and less anxious. It can be made into long-lasting ingestible forms like drinks and treats.

What does it do?

CBD is being studied for a wide range of medical benefits. Beyond relaxing and relieving stress, CBD is being researched for a broad array of other benefits that aren’t as thoroughly studied. Some of the more well-studied uses of CBD include treating seizures, anxiety, and pain. Consumers and CBD manufacturers also boast about a number of other less well-studied medical benefits such as treatment for cancers, though this is still under research and has not been proven.

Is it safe?

Yes. There is no risk of overdosing on CBD oil, and it's non-lethal. Meaning if your pet ingests too much, it shouldn't cause any real damage. There are some side effects that include drowsiness, possible diarrhea, dry mouth, and other mild symptoms. Don't let that stop you from giving it a try. Every pet is different just like us!

How much should I use?

Studies using CBD for dogs with arthritis or seizures typically recommend doses of 2-8 mg/kg every 8 hours.

There are many potential benefits to using CBD for dogs, and the positive effects tend to outweigh the side effects. Because there is a theoretical risk of a drug interaction, as with any medication, you should first check with your veterinarian before giving your dog CBD.
