Fun Facts About the Most Popular Large Breed Dogs

Large breed dogs are some of the most popular dog breeds in the world. These powerful, massive dogs are beloved by many people because of their friendliness and their natural affection towards children and adults alike. If you’re thinking about getting a large breed dog or are considering adding one to your family, check out these facts about the most popular large breed dogs!

Golden Retriever

While many dogs have been bred to look a certain way, it can be difficult to tell how old a dog actually is. Many owners are shocked when they find out just how old their Golden Retriever really is! A good rule of thumb for determining your Golden Retriever’s age is to simply count their wrinkles. If your pooch has more than 12 wrinkles, then you can assume that they are over 7 years old and are ready for senior care.

Labrador Retriever

You’ve probably seen a Labrador retriever before, especially if you live in a major metropolitan area. Labs are gentle, affectionate dogs who have been popular with American families for years. Labs love children and other pets, and will play for hours at a time. They’re also extremely good at helping their owners stay fit—not just because they can run for miles on end but because they almost always respond to commands even when off-leash.

German Shepherd

Noted for their loyalty and bravery, German Shepherds can grow up to be very large. A fully grown adult male German Shepherd will generally weigh between 75 and 100 pounds, while a female will weigh between 55 and 80 pounds. Typically though, German Shepherds will hit their peak at one year of age. On average, they stand at 26 inches tall and have a double coat that protects them from harsh weather conditions.

Australian Shepherd

The Australian Shepherd is very protective of their owner and family, they are often called working dogs as they are able to do a variety of tasks. They are strong willed and independent, but will obey when told to do something. They need regular exercise and training, as without it they tend to get themselves into trouble. The Australian shepherd has a thick coat that requires daily brushing or combing. They shed twice a year – heavily – requiring an increase in grooming during those times.

Great Dane

Known for their gentle and playful nature, Great Danes are one of the largest dog breeds around. They were originally bred to hunt wild boar, but today they’re great family pets because of their mild temperament. An average adult Great Dane will stand anywhere from 28 to 34 inches at shoulder height, with a weight that typically ranges between 100 and 180 pounds! That’s huge! While Great Danes may be well suited for apartments, they do best in larger spaces because of their size. A daily dose of exercise is important to keep them lean. Don’t forget that these giants can live as long as 10 years or more when given proper care!
